The Department for Education and Child Development (ECD) offers the
ECD Basic Emergency Life Support (BELS) program (formally DECS BELS) for education and childcare workers as well as Anaphylaxis and Seizure Management training.
ECD BELS has been developed in collaboration with
First Aid training organisations to comply with national first aid training recommendations. Principals and directors should ensure that all learners can access first aid support.
ECD BELS is only run by Australian Red Cross.
Some learners have an additional, individual first aid needs (eg use of Epi-Pen for anaphylaxis, emergency (not routine) administration of oxygen for a respiratory conditions, seizure management).
Staff asked to undertake such procedures as part of their responsibilities should first contact the Australian Red Cross SA Division to determine whether an ECD funded and supported program is available.
Where such programs are available, they should be attended by all staff members who have the learner in their care.

Guidelines for determining first aid training requirements for sitesThe level of financial support for first aid training has been increased. Funding will be provided for any permanent teacher or permanent preschool and school support staff wanting to undertake the new ECD BELS course as their current first aid certificate expires.
There is no change to arrangements for first aid courses related to individual student needs (for example first aid for anaphylaxis and use of prescribed intranasal midazolam): sites book these directly with Australian Red Cross and the training cost is covered centrally.
