Training aim:
To enhance knowledge, understanding and effective planning and support for children with movement difficulties within the context of education, childcare and other children's services.
To enable staff to assist children with movement difficulties to enjoy and participate actively and successfully in learning and care environments.
Learning outcomes:
Participants will:
- expand their awareness of the specific issues experienced by children with DCD and the broader implications for their development
- more readily identify children experiencing persistent movement difficulties
- develop their capacity to apply simple, effective and professionally relevant to support children experiencing movement difficulties
- learn about ways to work with families to support these children
- have a greater awareness of when and how to refer children to other professionals and services in the community
Content:
- What is and isn't developmental coordination disorder (DCD) including other issues that can run parallel with the incoordination
- How the experiences of children with movement difficulties can differ from those of other children in the education/care environment
- Signs for teachers and other staff that may alert them to the children's movement difficulties
- Formal assessments of children's movement skill level
- Effective strategies for education and childcare environments
- Family involvement
- Resources for further assistance
