The Hospital Education Services (HES) provides a teaching and learning service for school aged patients at the Flinders Medical Centre.

  • The HES teacher facilitates a student's access to the school curriculum and can assist with the transition of students back into their own schools.
  • The HES teacher visits the Paediatric ward Monday - Friday during school term
  • Children and students in other wards can be seen by negotiation with the teacher.
  • A classroom teaching service is provided at the FMC.

Who can use this service?

  • The Hospital Education Services can be accessed by all school-aged children who are likely to be in hospital for at least 2 school days or with frequent re-admissions.
  • A referral is required to access the service.
  • Students attending Public, Independent and Catholic schools are eligible to receive services.

How do we get a referral?

  • Referrals are considered from medical professionals at the Flinders Medical Centre.

What happens Next?

  • On receipt of the referral the visiting teacher will introduce themselves to the student, liaise with the student's home school to negotiate curriculum delivery, and provide educational support to the student.

Outpatient Support Services

Hospital Education Services also provide educational assessments as members of several multidisciplinary teams, including the Children's Assessment Team based at the Flinders Medical Centre.
